Famous cathedrals in Spain

Spain is not only famous for its most beautiful beaches and mountains; it is also famous for its historical buildings like cathedrals, churches, forts, etc. As a matter of fact almost every province, city and even a remote village has a cathedral and most of these cathedrals have some history behind it. So a tour on the beach of Spain will be refreshing, and it would be religious in the cathedral. Now let us just take a tour of some of the famous and historical cathedrals in Spain.

Seville Cathedral La Giralda Sevilla:

This cathedral is in Andalusia. History says that a mosque existed at the place where the cathedral is now built. Archaeologists are of the opinion that the cathedral was built during the period 1406 to 1502. They also say that some additions to the structure were made in the 16th century. Thereafter the cathedral was decorated in gold under the stewardship of the master craftsman Pierre Dancart. This World Heritage Structure of UNESCO is rated at the number one position in terms of tourists visiting the Cathedral. The stunningly beautiful structure stands majestically at a prominent location in Seville, Spain.

It is a combination of Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance architecture and is certainly the most beautiful architectural work ever created in Europe. The patio consisting of orange trees is one of the main features of this cathedral. It is said that the cathedral is built on a mosque which already existed. Now this cathedral stands majestically in Seville. It attracts a large number of tourists from around the world.

Toledo cathedral:

This is one of the ancient cathedrals of Europe. According to historians, a Visigothic church existed at the place where the present cathedral exists. This was replaced by a mosque and later during 1226 to 1493 another cathedral was built on the mosque and the present Toledo church came into existence. One of the main events attributed to this church is proclamation of Joanna and her husband, Phillips the handsome to Spain’s throne. Both the exterior and the interior of the cathedral is beautifully decorated with masterly works of sculpture, a huge fresco of St. Christopher greets the visitors to the church. The centre of the cathedral has a huge choir. This cathedral also attracts a large number of visitors every day.
